The Orleans Arena in Las Vegas announced that it will host the 2009 West Coast Conference Basketball tournament, making it the first casino venue to hold a college conference basketball championship event. The WCC championships will be held at the Orleans Arena March 6-9, 2009.
"We are thrilled to be hosting the WCC basketball championships at the Orleans Arena," said Steve Stallworth, vice president and general manager of the Orleans Arena. "Our experience with a variety of world-class sporting events makes us a natural fit for this opportunity."
The 8,500-seat Orleans Arena has a groundbreaking history with college basketball. In 2006, both the Las Vegas Invitational featuring #1 ranked Florida vs. Kansas and Las Vegas Classic were played there—becoming the first college basketball tournaments hosted in a casino venue with a sports book.
The WCC tournament will be played March 6-9, 2009. The eight teams participating include nationally ranked Gonzaga University, St. Mary’s College, University of San Diego, Santa Clara University, Pepperdine University, University of San Francisco, University of Portland and Loyola Marymount University.
ABOUT THE WCC
The West Coast Conference was formed in 1952 to provide a convenient venue for five San Francisco Bay Area schools to compete in basketball. Since that modest beginning, the Conference has evolved and grown to become a nationally recognized and competitive force in intercollegiate athletics, with 13 league-sponsored sports: baseball; both men's and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, and tennis; and women's volleyball and crew. The eight WCC members, Gonzaga, Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Portland, Saint Mary's, San Diego, San Francisco, and Santa Clara, span the western coast of the United States from Canada to Mexico. From the pine forests of Eastern Washington, to the Columbia River Basin, to the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area, to the sunny beaches of Southern California, the Conference is characterized by the stability of its membership - only two conferences have been together longer - and its unique emphasis on combining excellence in athletics with excellence in academics.
